PET meets packaging goals for brands, retailers, and consumers

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic—universally recognized by the #1 inside the triangle on the packaging—is the most commonly used packaging in retail today, and for good reason. It’s safe, durable, eco-friendly, and shatterproof, with strong shelf appeal and high clarity, and perhaps best of all, it’s made to be remade (meaning it’s designed to be recycled).

A new PET bottle can be made with up to 100 percent post-consumer recycled (PCR) content.

PET applications are a natural choice for brands seeking to incorporate PCR content into their products. PET offers innovation and performance for end products ranging from beverage containers and produce packaging to ketchup and shampoo bottles.

NAPCOR applauds the efforts of retailers and brands that have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable packaging, even as we’re concerned about the trend to deprioritize it. Packaging made from PET supports a company’s commitment to the planet and its people.

Below are just a few examples of such corporate social responsibility efforts. Explore Packaging Dive’s sustainability goals tracker for a more comprehensive list.

Walmart

Walmart’s Project Gigaton encourages suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with packaging. PET packaging can help achieve that goal, as it is lightweight (less resin needed and less weight to pack and transport), designed to be recycled, and up to 100% recycled PET can be incorporated into packaging.
