PET Design & Bale Spec Guidelines

PET Recyclability Guidelines For Package Designers

Take advantage of the vast possibilities to innovate with PET packaging, but ensure your container design is compatible with recycling to embody the great sustainability story PET has to offer. The APR Design® Guide is the plastics recycling industry’s design guidance repository, with detailed information on recycling compatibility for PET innovations, including base resin, additives, color, labels, caps/dispensers and postconsumer content. NAPCOR has worked collaboratively with the The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), the trade organization for plastics recyclers in North America, over many years on technical issues pertaining to PET recyclability.

PET Bale Specifications

The latest model bale specifications for PET include bale “gradings” intended to provide standardized, industry-agreed, voluntary metrics that offer a shared method of assessing and improving PET bale quality. Gradings are based solely on the fraction of PET in each bale, by weight, before processing.

The original model bale specifications developed jointly by NAPCOR and the APR developed over time to accommodate three types of PET bales: PET Bottles (No PET Thermoforms); PET Bottles with Thermoforms; and PET Thermoforms. A sample test method accompanies all current PET bale specifications with gradings, accessible through the APR website linked below.
